How to fix "camera already in use" errors

This error means the OS thinks another process has an exclusive lock on your camera — here's how to actually find and release it.
Check the obvious apps first
Zoom, Teams, Skype, Discord, and OBS are the most common culprits. Close them completely — not minimized to the taskbar — and check their system tray icons too, since some keep running in the background after the window closes.
Browser tabs count too
If you have another tab or another browser window that requested camera access earlier and never released it, that can hold the lock. Close other tabs that might be using the camera, not just other apps.
When nothing visible is using it
On Windows, check Task Manager for background processes like Windows Camera Frame Server (frameserverservice) — restarting this service via Services.msc can clear a stuck lock without a full reboot. On macOS, a full restart is usually the fastest fix once you've ruled out visible apps.
